The elites benefit from the status quo and are highly motivated to maintain their wealth and power. The elites fight reform by distracting American voters. The easiest way to distract voters from the real issues is to fan the flames of the culture wars. The most distracting issues are rooted in identity politics. The elites use these  identity politics issues to effectively divide Americans while easily distracting effort away from the real issues.
