Most Americans work full-time to maintain their current standard of living. The vast majority of Americans are "working class" by definition because of this fact. The popular term "middle class" is hard to define and could refer to some working class and/or wealthier Americans, depending on context. Mainstream media, politicians, and elites use the general term "middle class" but fail to define it. They use this misleading term to seem inclusive while purposefully preventing the American public from realizing the reality of class and labor in the United States.
Most of us are working class. All working class employees can benefit from worker rights and labor reform. These issues affect all workers and their families.
Healthcare & Health Insurance
Nearly all Americans obtain health insurance from an employer to cover most healthcare costs. Insurance companies effectively lobbied politicians to establish a status quo that keeps the market for health insurance closed and complicated. Healthcare reform to open the market on health insurance would help all working class Americans (and families).
There are also worker issues that affect some workers more than others. A good example is telework and remote work.
Telework & Remote Work
Telework and remote work are available to many employees due to the nature of the job. Many Americans can work remotely thanks to the many technologies available. COVID-19 revealed that many Americans could complete their work while fully remote without loss of productivity. Studies show that remote work improves employee satisfaction and increases productivity.
However, some employers attempt a "return to office" (RTO) policy despite the benefits of remote work. It is obvious that many RTO policies are used as a tactic to encourage employees to quit. This allows employers to conduct layoffs without paying unemployment to employees. Employees have little if any recourse to fight unjust RTO policies.
Labor Law & Unions
Labor law allows for unions to protect worker rights but the laws need an update for the present.
